Big Ideas on Wellington’s Future

Big ideas are cool again. In politics, business and society, New Zealanders are looking for transformative ways of changing the world around them. The best place to find inspiration is at Wellington: Creating Tomorrow Forum.
“On 4 July 2019, hundreds of Wellingtonians will come together at the Michael Fowler Centre to discuss the future of our city and region,” spokesperson Lynda Carroll said. “A cross section of Wellington’s most inspirational speakers will share their vision of Wellington’s future and collaborate with participants to build a blueprint for change.”
The Forum will host some of Wellington's leading decision-makers
(like Grant Robertson, MP for Wellington Central and Chloe Swarbrick, MP); Iwi leaders (like Wayne Mulligan Chair of the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust and Anake Goodall, former CEO of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu); advocates (like Sophie Handford, organiser of the recent #SchoolStrike4Climate); policy planners (like Moana Mackey, the Chief Advisor to the Chief City Planner at Wellington City Council); youth leaders (like Tamatha Paul, President VUW Students' Assn); and Dr Sarb Johal, Psychologist and disaster mental health expert.
“These speakers and others will be sharing their ideas and aspirations for our city and region, engaging in substantive conversations with the audience to build common communities of interest,” Ms Carroll says. “The vision is that these communities will collaborate, facilitate and inspire long-term collective change-making.”
The audience, get to choose what community they join, it may be about creative wellbeing; the urban environment; youth justice; mental health; arts and culture; reducing inequality; kerbside recycling and so the list goes on. This is a fabulous opportunity to be inspired, build partnerships with those who share their interests and want to take action to create a Wellington region where you want to live.
This year’s Forum comes on the heels of eight years of success. In previous years the Forum has delved into topics ranging from security and privacy to the lessons Wellington should draw from Christchurch’s experience with earthquakes.
